Markets still cautious after elections in Ukraine – Danske Bank
FXStreet (Edinburgh) - The recent elections in Ukraine could be the first step towards a solution of the crisis, suggested Flemming Nielsen, Senior Analyst at Danske Bank.
Key Quotes
“The election of Piotr Poroshenko as Ukrainian president with more than 50% of the votes has so far received a cautious endorsement from Russia”.
“Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday said that Russia would ‘respect the will of the Ukrainian people’ and that Moscov ‘was ready for dialogue’”.
“However, Lavrov also warned against resuming military operations in eastern Ukraine”.
“Poroshenko yesterday said that a meeting with Moscow was likely to take place in the first half of June. Hence, the overall impression is that Russia at the moment is not attempting to escalate the crisis but we still see considerable downside risk from continued military operations in eastern Ukraine”.
